I asked the auto insurance companies who’ve lobbied on Hochul’s cost-savings proposals how much they would cut premiums for policy holders.
Here’s what each of them said — and didn’t say — as a response to my inquiry, including whether they would commit to lowering those costs.
Hochul, meanwhile, says she’s taking a hard look at whether to cut the state’s profit cap for auto insurers as another way to provide relief.

There are times when I forget that, as a journalist, I’m allowed to ask private companies questions in the public interest.
That’s what I remembered last week when I learned that Democrats in the state Legislature weren’t convinced car insurance companies would lower costs for consumers if a set of proposals from Gov. Kathy Hochul become law.
