Good afternoon — it’s Wednesday, and Chocolate Chip Day.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 2024

TODAY’S CAPCON:

  • Could N.Y. decriminalize sex work? Two competing bills are on the table.

  • Democrats are seeking some election law changes before session ends.

  • A Times Union investigation has prompted Republican calls for hearings.

  • On The Bill looks at legislation that could draw more abortion providers to N.Y.

🔨 Is Tomorrow a Session Day? Yes.

🌷 Tonight’s Weather: Albany: Chance of rain, high 50s. New York City: Rain, high 50s (National Weather Service)

⚖️ Could N.Y. lawmakers pass legislation this year to decriminalize sex work?

🖋️ Two bills sponsored by Democrats would decriminalize the trade in different ways.

  • Remember the Clean Slate bill, which Democrats passed last year in the final days of session as its chances had started to dim?

  • Or in 2021, when lawmakers passed a bill to allow gun manufacturers to be sued for creating a “public nuisance”? Some lawmakers were hazy on their support before the bill hit the floor.

So if Democrats who control the Legislature decide to pass a bill that would bar criminal charges to people who perform sex work, it wouldn’t be a total surprise.
