⚖️ Cuomo wins, Stefanik loses in rulings from state appellate court

🧑‍⚖️ In separate rulings from the court in Albany, former Gov. Andrew M. CUOMO got some good news, while Rep. Elise STEFANIK did not.

New York’s top elected officials have tried for decades (I’m not exaggerating) to create an effective ethics oversight agency for state government.

  • (The Legislature has its own investigatory ethics entity.)

The latest iteration — the Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government — was created by Gov. Kathy HOCHUL and the Legislature two years ago after Cuomo left office.

  • The commission was framed by Hochul and lawmakers as a reset after the previous agency — the Joint Commission on Public Ethics — became viewed as ineffective. 

  • And the agency had other problems, like an alleged leak to Cuomo about a closed-door vote concerning his 2014 campaign for governor.

But that wasn’t his last conflict with the agency, and there was news on that today.
