🗣️ Hochul, lawmakers push for legislative response after Minneapolis killing

Democrats in the state Legislature called on their colleagues Thursday to support a series of immigrant protection bills after yesterday’s fatal shooting in Minnesota.

Some of those bills were already on the table last year but didn’t have support from a majority of Democrats. New York For All, for example, would prohibit state and local resources from being used for immigration enforcement.

But several bills have been introduced since then in response to an uptick in detainments by federal immigration officers over the summer

Given that the first day of this year’s legislative session was Wednesday, lawmakers haven’t had time to conference those bills and decide which, if any, they’ll decide to pass. There’s an interest among several lawmakers to act quickly.

There’s a long list of bills that lawmakers have introduced for consideration. I’ve created a public portal for you to view them on Capitol Confidential Pro, powered by USLege.

Hover over the description of any of those bills and you’ll see an option to show details. CapCon Pro will then generate a summary of the bill so you don’t have to navigate its text.

Several lawmakers rallied in Albany and New York City on Thursday in support of some of those bills, asking their colleagues to join their calls for immediate passage.

“This is a break-the-glass and pull-the-lever moment, people,” Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris said at a rally in New York City.

Aside from New York For All, there are a handful of bills that lawmakers rallied in support of Thursday; Gov. Kathy Hochul said she has plans as well.
