🗣️ Hochul calls ICE arrest of NYC comptroller ‘bullshit.’ Stefanik says he deserved it

Federal agents arrested New York City Comptroller Brad Lander at a federal immigration courthouse without explanation Tuesday.

Lander, a Democrat who’s also running for New York City mayor, was inside the courthouse with an immigrant when the masked agents began to approach them. Their intention was to detain the immigrant but Lander held on to him while asking to see a warrant.

“I will let go when you show me the judicial warrant. Where is it?” Lander is heard saying in videos of the incident.

The agents continued to pull the immigrant away, with Lander attached. A few seconds later, they broke Lander away and placed him in handcuffs.

“You don’t have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens,” Lander is then heard saying before he’s taken into an elevator by the agents.

The entire incident lasted less than two minutes but spread like wildfire through several videos posted on social media.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security later put out a statement claiming Lander impeded a federal officer and assaulted at least one of them. That assault is not seen in the videos circulating of Lander’s arrest.

“It is wrong that politicians seeking higher office undermine law enforcement safety to get a viral moment,” the statement said. “No one is above the law, and if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will face consequences.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul was asked about it after a press event Tuesday afternoon. She did not mince words.
