⚖️ Trump signs order to withhold federal funding over cash bail laws
Republicans in New York have been trying to reverse changes made to the state’s laws on cash bail since they took effect in 2020.
They’ve been successful to a certain degree. Republicans have led an opposition campaign that’s influenced the public and, in return, put pressure on public officials to amend the laws. That’s happened at least three times.
They were approved by Democrats to overhaul a two-tiered system. People with enough money were able to pay up and walk free before their trial. People without that money had to sit in jail on the same charge.
The new laws removed the option for judges to set cash bail for most misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies.
They’re now required to release defendants before their trial without bail if they’re brought in on those charges. But cash bail is still allowed for severe charges.
President Donald J. Trump is now threatening to withhold federal funding from New York and other states and cities that have sought to restrict the use of cash bail in court.
