☑️ What we know about New York’s top primaries with polls now closed
It was a tough night for incumbents and candidates considered to be tied to the establishment wing of the Democratic Party in New York.
But it was a great night for the Democratic Socialists of America and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Several candidates endorsed by the DSA, Mamdani or both toppled incumbents at both the state and the federal level. While that will mean new faces in Congress, it will have a larger impact in the state Legislature.
It’s another election cycle in which Democratic voters have favored candidates further to the left, including democratic socialists in several cases.
That will give the left wing of the party more power at the state Capitol, where progressive priorities can sometimes meet resistance from moderate lawmakers.
We know the results of many races at the time of this newsletter. Others haven’t been officially called but favor one candidate.
I’ve placed a ✅ next to the names of the winners to make them easier to read, placed a ⬆️ by the leaders in races that haven’t yet been called and added a 🌹 to the winners and leaders who are democratic socialists.
