Good afternoon — It’s Tuesday and State Budget Day.
💰 Hochul is proposing a $260 billion state budget
Gov. Kathy Hochul is currently unveiling her executive budget proposal in a live address attended by top state lawmakers and members of her cabinet.
The items Hochul emphasizes in her remarks represent what she views as the most pressing parts of her agenda. But what she doesn’t include in that presentation can also be telling.
I’ll have a more detailed rundown of Hochul’s budget later this afternoon but I wanted to give you her book and a few toplines of what she’s proposing to get you started.
Hochul wants to raise spending from the current $254 billion state budget to $260 billion in the new fiscal year, which begins in April.
But she doesn’t anticipate needing to raise the current income or corporate tax rates to get there. She’s not proposing changes to either but wants to enact tax parity between cigarettes and non-tobacco nicotine products, like ZYN pouches.
