Trans advocates aren't happy with N.Y. lawmakers amid federal gender actions
And Eric Adams was in Albany for Tin Cup Day.
Good afternoon — it’s Tuesday and Tin Cup Day.
In today’s CapCon:
Advocates for the LGBTQ+ community have noticed that many Democrats in New York haven’t weighed in on transgender rights amid federal uncertainty.
The Legislature has approved just three new bills since session began last month. See what they are.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams was in Albany Tuesday to testify before the Legislature on the state budget.
Gov. Kathy Hochul wants to create a new tax credit for businesses that relocate to certain buildings in New York City.
🗣️ N.Y. is taking a wait-and-see approach on gender affirming care. Advocates want more.
Advocates for the LGBTQ+ community in New York plan to rally at the state Capitol Wednesday for two reasons: to protest the Trump administration and ask Democrats to do more in their defense.
They’re still sour from last year’s elections, during which attacks on transgender people from opponents were met with little resistance from Democrats, who viewed the issue as politically inconvenient.
Some split from their party on women’s sports, for example, including Rep. Tom Suozzi, who saw it as a big reason Democrats were defeated in some states.
Advocates have waited to see if that posture would change after the elections or if Democrats would continue to avoid them.
About two weeks into the Trump administration, those advocates want an answer.
“It has not gone unnoticed that Gov. Kathy Hochul and many Democratic electeds have been silent about the numerous attacks on the transgender and gender nonconforming community,” said Kei Williams, interim executive director of the New Pride Agenda.
