🗣️ Trump declines to endorse in New York City mayor’s race, floats city takeover

It is no secret that President Donald J. Trump, a Queens native, does not like Zohran Mamdani, the assemblyman and Democratic nominee for New York City mayor.

“You shouldn’t vote for him. He’s a disaster,” Trump said in response to a question during a cabinet meeting Tuesday.

The questioner had asked Trump who he wants Republican voters in New York City to vote for in November, when the race for mayor will ultimately be decided. The Democratic nominee has won each election since 2013.

We don’t yet know who the final slate of candidates will be. We know Mamdani, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa will be on the ballot. Former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo hasn’t decided if he’ll continue his run.

Trump declined to back any of the latter three. An endorsement of Cuomo would have been a shock, but Sliwa is the nominee of Trump’s party and the president has had a positive relationship with Adams.
