🧑⚖️ Donald Trump was held in contempt of court on Tuesday, fined and warned that more outbursts could bring a visit to the pokey.
The ongoing courtroom tensions between Trump and his legal team and Judge Juan M. Merchan resulted in the former president being fined $9,000 for nine remarks.
The Associate Press said the judge noted in his ruling that he is “keenly aware … and protective” of Trump’s First Amendment rights, especially in light of his presidential candidacy.
The judge’s decision leaves open the possibility that the former president could be jailed for any future violations if he continues making public comments during his trial.
That would make Trump the first former president to be jailed, something pollsters have debated about whether that might help his candidacy.
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg has accused Trump and his associates of scheming to influence the 2016 presidential campaign by paying to have unsavory stories buried. Trump’s team says that practice is common and not illegal.
