Video of fatal beating at N.Y. prison released by state attorney general's office
And 200 more bills were introduced by lawmakers this week.
Good afternoon — it’s Friday and Fruitcake Day.
In today’s CapCon:
Video was released Friday of the fatal beating of Robert L. Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility while he was handcuffed on Dec. 9.
The video prompted the chair of the Senate Correction Committee to call for the prison’s closing.
Lawmakers prefiled another 200 bills this week. See the full list and highlights.
Hochul only has one bill left to consider after signing the Climate Change Superfund Act Thursday.
⚖️ Video of inmate who died after beating from correction officers released
Body cameras worn by correction officers have three modes: off, recording, and passive.
The last is when the body camera is on and recording but wasn’t initiated by an officer. If that mode didn’t exist, we may have never known what happened to Robert L. Brooks’ at Marcy Correctional Facility prior to his death on Dec. 10.
The state attorney general’s office Friday released a compilation of recordings from body cameras worn by four of the numerous officers who were part of the beating or present when it happened. It is not easy to watch.
The video shows what we already knew from court filings: that Brooks was handcuffed when he was beaten.
We’ve got a link to the video and in-depth reporting on the incident after the paywall. (Here’s a free two-week trial.)
